MAINTAIN YOUR ENGLISH THIS SUMMER – 10 TIPS

The Summer holidays have almost arrived! However, it’s important not to forget your English. Coach John gives some tips to maintain your English.

1. Dive into English Books

Reading is one of the most effective ways to improve your vocabulary and understanding of English. This summer, make a list of books in English that interest you. They could be novels, biographies, or even comic books. The key is to choose books that you find engaging so that learning doesn’t feel like a chore. As you read, take note of new words and phrases, and try to use them in your conversations.

2. Watch English Movies and Shows

Who says learning can’t be fun? Watching movies and TV shows in English is a great way to improve your listening skills and pick up natural language patterns. To make the most of this, try watching with English subtitles initially, and then challenge yourself by turning them off. Discuss the plots and characters with friends or family members who are also learning English to make it a social activity.

3. Practice Speaking Regularly

The more you speak in English, the more comfortable you will become with the language. Try to find a conversation partner, or join an English-speaking club or online group. Don’t worry about making mistakes; the important thing is to practice. You could even set daily goals, like ordering your coffee in English or having a small chat with a friend.

4. Keep a Journal in English

Writing regularly in English is an excellent way to improve your  writing skills and express your thoughts. Start a journal and write about your daily experiences, thoughts, or plans. This exercise will not only enhance your writing abilities but also help you reflect on your progress in learning English.

5. Listen to English Music and Podcasts

Listening to music and podcasts in English can be both entertaining and educational. Pay attention to the lyrics of songs and try to understand the meaning behind them. Podcasts, on the other hand, are a great way to hear conversational English on a wide range of topics. You can listen to them while commuting, exercising, or even doing household chores.

6. Take Up a New Hobby in English

Whether it’s cooking, gardening, or any other hobby, try to pursue it using English resources.
Read English instructions, watch tutorials in English, and even try to connect with others who are following the same hobby in English. This contextual learning can be incredibly effective.

8. Travel to English-Speaking Destinations

If possible, traveling to an English-speaking country is an immersive way to improve your language skills. Being in a place where English is the primary language forces you to use it in real-life situations, greatly enhancing your learning experience.

9. Use Language Learning Apps

There are numerous apps available designed to help improve your English. These can be particularly useful for grammar practice and vocabulary expansion. Set aside some time each day to engage with these apps for consistent practice.

10. Believe in Yourself

Lastly, believe in your ability to learn and improve your English. Language learning can have its challenges, but with persistence and the right mindset, you can make great strides. Celebrate your progress and enjoy the journey of learning a new language.

In conclusion, keeping your English skills sharp over the summer is not only about studying hard but also about integrating the language into your daily life in fun and engaging ways. Whether it’s through reading, watching movies, speaking, or even playing games, every little bit of practice counts. Remember to set realistic goals, stay consistent, and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning. English is not just a language; it’s a window to a world of opportunities and experiences.
